Watt Electric Vehicle Company (WEVC) has announced its first car, the WEVC Coupé. The car blends modern EV technology with classic style as its composite body is inspired by the legendary 1955 Porsche 356a.
Although the Coupé looks very similar to the Porsche 356A, its exterior has been subtly honed for modern aerodynamic efficiency. Inside, the cabin is all-new and constructed from premium-grade lightweight materials, while respecting the classic aesthetics of the ‘50s. It will also benefit from modern conveniences like air-conditioning and mobile connectivity.
Underneath the familiar ‘50s styling is WEVC’s cutting edge ‘PACES’ platform, which is constructed from bonded aluminium and features an integrated battery enclosure, saving weight and optimising the chassis’ structural efficiency.
WEVC’s cleverly designed platform means that the Coupé’s kerbweight is under 1000kg, in spite of its raft of batteries. The mid-mounted electric motor sends its 160bhp to the rear wheels and helps the car achieve that all important 50:50 weight distribution.
Pair the mid-engined, 50:50 layout with double-wishbone suspension and “carefully-honed ride, handling and steering characteristics”, and the Coupé promises an engaging drive.
The WEVC Coupé is the latest example of the growing popularity of electrification in the classic car world, in spite of resistance from some purists. With the Coupé’s estimated 230-mile range and 0-62mph time of around five seconds, it’s not difficult to see why.
WEVC director, Neil Yates, says: “The Coupé…is our very first model – and the first to utilise our PACES modular EV architecture, which will underpin many next-generation specialist passenger and commercial EVs…We wanted to build a light, engaging sports car, at the opposite end of the spectrum from the current trend toward hugely powerful, fast accelerating, but heavy electric supercars."
The Cornwall-based company will continue to develop the Coupé over the coming months, with manufacturing beginning in November ready for first deliveries in early 2022. Launch editions of the car start at £81,250 and can be individually tailored to the customer’s preferences.
