The Renault 5 Turbo is being reborn as a 500bhp, all-electric, rear-wheel-drive hyper hatch that’s heading for production in 2025. Renault made the announcement in the final episode of a new Prime Video documentary called Anatomy of a Comeback, that tells the story of the marque’s recovery from near collapse in the early 2020s.
Renault’s latest performance car follows the 5 Turbo 3E concept that made its public debut to great acclaim at the 2022 Paris Motor Show. Despite the fanfare, there was scepticism that the 3E would make it into production.
With a pugnacious wide-body kit, the production-spec Turbo retains much of the concept’s visual drama and stays true to the aesthetic of its mid-engined ancestors.
Unlike those forebears, however, the car is built upon a bespoke carbonfibre monocoque and is powered by two electric motors housed within the rear wheels.
Together, these electric motors develop around 500bhp – more than three times the 158bhp produced by the Turbo 2 from the 1980s. Despite being rear-wheel drive only, the new Turbo will accelerate from 0-62mph in just 3.5 seconds.
Further details are thin on the ground, with Renault yet to confirm the model’s pricing or build numbers at the time of writing. We expect more to be revealed next year as production nears.
