Iconic Auctioneers is kicking off 2025 with a bang, offering an extraordinary trio of Group B homologation cars at its annual Race Retro sale at Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire, UK on February 22, 2205.

Built to meet strict motor sport regulations, homologation specials are limited-production, road-legal performance cars coveted by collectors worldwide. Iconic Auctioneers has established itself as a leader in this niche, selling 12 such cars in 2024 alone.

Topping the bill is a rare 1990 Ford RS200 S, estimated to sell for £300,000 to £350,000. Chassis 138 is one of just 20 S models ever built and one of only four finished in striking ‘Ferrari Red’ paintwork.

Originally built as a left-hand-drive example, the car was converted to right-hand drive by Ford Motorsport in Boreham at the owner’s request. Notably, the left-hand-drive components are included in the sale, alongside the standard eight-spoke wheels.

Having covered just under 20,000 miles over 34 years, this RS200 boasts a comprehensive history file with invoices from renowned specialists, including Gordon Spooner Engineering, Graham Hathaway Racing, Geoff Page Engineering and TME Motorsport Engineering.

Next is a pugnacious 1986 MG Metro 6R4, an ex-Works example estimated at £275,000 to £325,000. Chassis 208 competed in the infamous 1986 Rallye de Portugal with Tony Pond and Rob Arthur, and later achieved a podium finish in the 1986 Marlboro Port Talbot rally with David Llewellin and Phil Short.

The car was subsequently sold to Ian Beveridge, ex-manager of Austin Rover’s Tyre Department, who campaigned it in the BTRDA Championship between 1987 and 1989. Since 1996, it has been owned by its current consignor, achieving notable results such as victory at the 1999 Tempest Rally and numerous class wins at the Rallye Sunseeker.

Chassis 208 has also been a fixture at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, appearing 16 times and thrilling Forest Rally Stage crowds with drivers such as Jimmy McRae and Petter Solberg. Maintained by ex-Works engineer Rod Lynne until 2006, it has been prepared by Historic Motorsport and Autosportif since 2010.

Rounding out the trio is a remarkably original 1987 MG Metro 6R4 Clubman, estimated at £200,000 to £240,000. With just 3423 miles on the clock, chassis 059 is a true time capsule and has never been used in competition.

Originally owned by Simon Norton of Bungay, Suffolk for 19 years, it passed to its second owner before being acquired by the current consignor in 2009. The car has since undergone a meticulous refresh, preserving its originality while ensuring mechanical integrity.

The 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged V6 engine was rebuilt by ex-Works technician John Manklow of Goodmans Racing Engines, while the transmission and differentials were fully overhauled. The suspension has also been refurbished to Bilstein’s original specifications.

Accompanied by an extensive history file, including ten pages of invoices, the original sales brochure and build manuals, this 6R4 Clubman is a true time capsule for collectors.

These three standout machines are among more than 100 consignments at Iconic Auctioneers’ Race Retro sale. The auction house is welcoming additional entries to the catalogue until January 24, 2025.
