On the year of its 30th anniversary, the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles, California has announced it will open four brand-new exhibits dedicated to motoring innovation on August 3, 2024. These new displays will be located on the museum’s second-floor galleries, and will showcase everything from historic concept vehicles to rare hypercars and futuristic prototypes.

Alternating Currents: The Fall and Rise of Electric Vehicles highlights the evolution of EVs from a 1896 Riker through to the bespoke 2021 Lanark DS Roadster. The exhibition will be held in the Propulsion Gallery and is being supported by BMW and battery manufacturer Clarios. Other highlights include a 1991 BMW E2 Concept, a 1970s Zagato Zele 1000 and a 1992 GM Impact.

The second exhibition being launched focuses on concept cars built since the Petersen first opened its doors in 1994. Entitled Modern Concepts: Future Visions from the Recent Past, the display will include the 2002 XENO III, 1999 Ford 021C, 1995 Ford GT90, 2002 Cadillac Cien, 2004 Chrysler ME Four-Twelve and 2008 Honda FC Sport.

Supercar fans will be delighted by the Super/Hyper: The Ultimate Automobiles display. This showcase features some of the most extraordinary high-performance vehicles ever engineered, including the confirmed appearances of the Bugatti Divo and Koenigsegg CCXR.

The last of the four exhibits is Driven to Possibility: Waymo’s Road to Autonomous Transportation. Just as the name suggests, the exhibition explores the innovations made in autonomous driving by US tech company Waymo, formerly known as the Google Self-Driving Car Project.

Located in the Production Gallery, Driven to Possibility provides visitors with the opportunity to peruse never-before-seen objects from Waymo’s development process. Exhibits include the Waymo Firefly, which was the first autonomous vehicle to transport a passenger without an accompanying driver, as well as a prototype version of the company’s Zeekr platform and a six-wheeled mobile robot known as the Terregator.

“This near-simultaneous launch of four incredibly diverse exhibits marks a milestone for our museum,” said Petersen Automotive Museum executive director Terry L Karges.”We are committed to showcasing all elements of the automotive world – past, present and future – and this collection of unique vehicles will bring that experience to life for our guests.”
