The organisers of the historic Mille Miglia race have postponed the event to June 16-19. The Superclassica Mitteleuropean Race will take the May 14 slot previously occupied by the “Most Beautiful Race in the World”.
The calendar alterations have been made in the hope that the severity of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic is lessened by the time June arrives. The rescheduling of the Mille Miglia marks the second year in succession that the race’s planning has been disrupted by COVID, as last year it was extraordinarily held in October.
"After the experience of 1000 Miglia 2020 in the autumn, held last October, this year we will experience an unprecedented race in early summer.
"The decision, taken in full agreement with the institutions and competent authorities, derived from the wish to be able to offer the exciting experience of the competition while giving maximum attention to safeguarding the health of participants, partners, public and organization staff,” says Franco Gussalli Beretta, president of 1000 Miglia.
The Mille Miglia and Superclassica Mitteleuropean Race’s reshuffling is the latest example of the disruption of automotive events inflicted by the virus. The St Moritz ICE concours and Heveningham concours have already faced cancellations in the preceding weeks.
