A Ferrari 248 Formula 1 car driven by seven-time World Champion Michael Schumacher is heading to the auction block in a Sotheby’s Sealed sale on November 19, 2024. Campaigned by the legendary German driver during the 2006 his season – his last with Scuderia Ferrari – the Ferrari could sell for more than $15 million.
Chassis 254 achieved five victories in a season when Schumacher was locked in a head-to-head battle for the title against the Renault of Fernando Alonso. The five wins came at the San Marino, European, US, French and German Grands Prix, in addition to three more podium finishes.
The Ferrari 248 that’s up for sale will be displayed in New York from November 8-20, 2024.
Sotheby’s notes the car’s excellent provenance, having been acquired by the consigner directly from Ferrari in 2007. It was subsequently certified by Ferrari Classiche, and stands as one of the most successful Schumacher-driven chassis despite falling short of World Championship glory.
Several of Schumacher’s F1 challengers have set impressive auction prices in the recent past, most notably his 2003 chassis, which smashed its high pre-auction estimate of £7m ($9.5m), selling for an eye-watering 14,600 CHF (£13m, $14.9m) in 2022. His 2001 and 2002 title-winners, meanwhile, each sold for in excess of £5m.
“In the world of motor sport, Michael Schumacher’s name is accurately used to define the pinnacle of racing,” commented RM Sotheby’s head of private sales Shelby Myers. “Never before has anything carrying the Schumacher name come to public sale with more wins or podium finishes. In fact, there is only one other chassis with more wins than chassis 254.”
If the car crosses the block for in excess of $15m, it will automatically become one of the most expensive Formula 1 cars ever sold.
