As dramatic as they were, the initial images of Jaguar‘s new concept, the Type 00, looked like computer-generated renders, even though the new cars actually exist – and the images certainly didn’t show the already-divisive models to their best.
Now, these images from the launch at the Miami Art Show on December 2, 2024 at least give a little more feeling for how Type 00 looks in a slightly more real-world environment… if you can ever call an art event in Miami ‘real world’.
While in the first press images, the rear, for example, appeared to be completely flat, now it’s clear that it’s formed in a compound curve shape, with full-width lights filling some of the ‘Strikethrough’ lines across the panel. This backs up our memories of it from the initial secret press reveal on November 11, at which phones and photography were strictly banned.
There’s more shape distinguishable to the front and sides in these images, too, and the illuminated headlights demonstrate how radical the designers have been in pushing the lights to the far corners of the front panel. Notice, as well, how much sculpturing there is to the sides, which again appeared flat in those unfortunate first images, and how the wheelarches bulge over the huge 23in wheels. This is one long, wide machine.
You can also see how the Strikethrough motif of horizontal lines is repeated not just across the front and rear, but also under the base of the windscreen and along the panoramic roof. The branding is subtle, with the controversially redesigned Jaguar nameplate relatively small on the front ‘grille’, ‘jr’ motifs on the centre caps of the wheels and – not that you can see it here – a tiny ‘Type 00’ printed on one of the Strikethrough lines of the front scuttle.
On the bottom edges of the front wings, you’ll just about make out the brass strips that are engraved with the famous Jaguar ‘Leaper’ big cat, with those Strikethrough lines behind it. The brass strips hinge out from their front edges to reveal rear-facing cameras.
JLR CEO Adrian Mardell appears in one of the images, having recently proclaimed to Autocar that he’s “never been more confident in Jaguar”. The plan for the brand, which won’t be delivering another customer car now until mid-2026, has been in the making for several years, at a planned investment of £18bn. That first model will be an EV four-door GT, with approximately 450-mile range and a price of around £130,000.
While the marketing and first showings of the new branding and the car itself caused uproar from Jaguar fans worldwide, the reveal at Miami struck a more optimistic note – and we can confirm that the Type 00 in the metal is much more impressive than it seemed from those first press pictures.
