From February 8-19 the second of a series of three online auctions dedicated to legendary racing driver Phil Hill is taking place.
The auctions are held by Gooding as part of their Geared Online platform. Each auction encompasses Hill’s automotive and personal interests, from watches to racing helmets.
Hill was one of the most decorated drivers to ever compete on a circuit; he won Le Mans 24 Hours three times and remains America’s only Formula 1 world champion.
During his illustrious 14-year career Hill raced for Scuderia Ferrari, McLaren, Lotus and Shelby, to name a few.
After his racing career, Hill became a renowned collector of automobilia and started a business restoring classic cars: Hill & Vaughn. Phil also became an important ambassador of the racing and automotive worlds.
“While Phil Hill needs no introduction among car enthusiasts, his automotive passions beyond racing are perhaps less known,” says David Gooding, founder and president of Gooding & Company. “After his crowning achievement of becoming America's first World Champion driver, he then focused on his famed restoration business.
“Both a collector and a world-class restorer, Phil’s passion for cars and collectibles was extraordinary. It is our honor to present these cherished possessions from The Phil Hill Automobilia Collection.”
The auctions feature items from the myriad of manufacturers Phil Hill raced for. There is also rare automotive literature from Hill’s personal library and archives. This comprises uncommon motoring books, magazines, car club publications, sales brochures, posters and prints.
The Phil Hill Automobilia Collection contains some of the rarest, most comprehensive automotive memorabilia to be auctioned in recent time.
The current auction is dedicated to Phil Hill’s racing life and highlights of the lot include; Hill’s Herbert and Johnson race helmet, his 1962 Le Mans winner’s trophy and Rolex Daytona.
Phil Hill’s son, Derek Hill, says, “Opening up my father’s archive to part with so many of his coveted treasures is a momentously sentimental event… It leaves me very excited to finally bring so much of this to light and to see it move on to folks who will absolutely cherish these long held objects.”
The third and final Phil Hill Automobilia Collection Auction will take place on March 15-26.
