The 2021 St Moritz International Concours of Elegance (ICE) has been cancelled due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The cancellation follows the news of two people testing positive for COVID-19 in the Engadin region last week.
Consequently, all major events have been cancelled until March 9th at the earliest. Government councillor Peter Peyer hopes the measures will “prevent the virus from being transmitted.” There are also a further 20 people in the region who are suspected to be COVID-19 positive.
The new restrictions mean that ICE has been postponed until February 26th, 2022. The cancellation of this year’s event marks the second time in succession that it has been axed because of the pandemic.
It was initially expected the situation surrounding the virus would have improved sufficiently to carry out a smaller, COVID safe event this year. Unfortunately, this proved not to be the case as global cases have continued to surge since last October.
Following its successful inaugural year in 2019, ICE was labelled a Diamond Event by Engadin St Moritz Tourismus AG.
The venue offers stunning surroundings, taking place on the frozen surface of St Moritz Lake. The unique nature of the setting means it is one of the few events that cannot simply be postponed until later in the year.
In 2019, there was an eclectic mix of 41 high quality classics to the event. Attendees witnessed several high value classics drifting across the lakes’ surface, including a Bugatti Type 35, Ferrari F50 and Lancia Stratos.
Hopefully, ICE will be back in similarly spectacular fashion in 2022.
